Radio 1 Rock Show with Mike Davies 16th November 2005 (01.00 to 03.00 a.m.)
Rammstein talk about their new single ‘Mann gegen Mann’, a song that
explores homosexuality in modern metal.
Mike Davies …huge show on the way for you,
Howard from Killswitch Engage will be dropping by the studio, Rammstein
playing DJ….
Mike Davies …Don’t forget Rammstein coming up,
playing DJ. We give them 3 choices of songs, they explain why they want to
play them, it’s that simple…
(02.34 a.m.)Mike Davies ….we have Rammstein,
they'll be playing DJ on our Monsters of Rock feature we do on the show,
picking 3 songs that influenced them, 3 of their favourite songs of all
time, whatever, they'll tell you all about it...I always pronounce this
wrong - Rammstein, the new single's called.. “Mann gegen Mann”
- Mann Gegen Mann -
Schneider This is the Radio 1 Rock Show and my
name is Schneider. I am the drummer of the band Rammstein. We have a new
album out, its name is ‘Rosenrot’, maybe you know already the single
‘Benzin’. I think we are the first German rock band English people really
listen to, nobody understands it but that's your problem. We had that
problem for 40 years listening to English music (laugh). In Russia,
they’re using Rammstein to teach German. If you're really interested, you
can learn the German language, then you can understand everything. There's
one sentence I really like in Benzin, "Willst du dich von etwas
trennen, dann mußt du es verbrennen. Willst du es nie wieder sehen, lass
es schwimmen in Benzin". That means if you want to get rid of
something, you have to let it swim in Benzin. The song called ‘Mann Gegen
Mann’, which means Man Against Man, unique Rammstein song, and the lyrics
are about homosexuality.
We’re choosing three songs from different decades which our band are
very very into, and the first one will be an old Pantera song, which was,
for me, the most cool song that band has ever written and it's called ‘A
New Level’. Pantera is a band who nailed hard music right on the point.
When I heard that music for the first time it was like a fist into my
face. That in essence is how to make heavy metal music and maybe there are
some wilder and harder bands out now but Pantera, the way they played
together especially bass and drums is still an example of how to do
it.
- Pantera : A New Level -
That was Pantera ‘A New Level’ which I think is one of the best songs
of that band and it's so cool and now we’re going on in time and listen to
something more modern, to maybe some people call the most evil band on the
planet right now, the American band Slipknot. We’ll listen to the opening
song from their 2001 album ‘Iowa’. In the first I didn't like that band. I
thought too obvious, you know, just this mask and I didn't listen much to
the music and the music was so fast and wild, just pure energy but we
played a tour with them in 2001 and I listen to the band 6 weeks every
evening and I start to like it. I like the energy in that band and yeah,
their music is not so on the point, but is so wild and so outrageous, its
definitely an important band in that genre.
- Slipknot :
People=Shit -
(large exhale of breath) That was Slipknot, we need a break, we need to
breathe (laughs) and relax a little bit. Now we jump into the year 2005.I
want to talk about the Scandinavian band Meshuggah, a band which I really
admire for what they do and they did a remix on one of our songs ‘Benzin’,
I was very envious why we couldn't make a song like that. This is
Meshuggah with ‘Benzin’.
- Benzin : Meshuggah remix -
Mike Davies Well a big thank you to Schneider
from Rammstein, he was playing DJ, that was his Monsters of Rock. He
picked Pantera ‘A New Level’, Slipknot ‘People=Shit’ from the album Iowa -
he said it took him six weeks of listening to that album every night to
them. I'm glad he stuck with them, Slipknot are a fantastic band, as you
guys all know and then last but not least, his third pick was the
Meshuggah remix of Rammstein ‘Benzin’, awesome track, so a big thank you
to Schneider and we’ll have another Monsters of rock coming up for you
over the next couple of weeks.
