Tills Herz brennt lichterloh – Mai 2001
Tills heart burns brightly
Bravo May 2001
This show is lethal! Bravo watched the Rockmonster Berliners on their “Mutter" Tour.
The scene on stage is reminiscent of Frankenstein’s eerie Lab: yellowed tiles, dry ice, bathed in light from the dozen operating theatre lights, dissected body parts float in glass tanks filled with spirit. In addition, the panicked beat of an oversized heart booms with the force of an earthquake from under the stage.
Every evening Rammstein serve up their “Mutter” Tour of pure horror to between 5,000 and 14,000 fans. The show starts with the surreal, tumbling birth of the diabolic “Dr Flake”. From an oversized uterus the five voyaging babies crash 1.80 meters down onto the stage floor. In the theatre ghostly silence prevails whilst Schneider (drums), Olli (bass), Till (singer), guitarists Paul and Richard, all naked except for diapers, fall helplessly to the ground. Pulled under the oxygen showers by laboratory attendants in white coats, they gradually awake from their zombie-like coma.
Wham! An enormous explosion rips through the air, blasting all the lights out. Seconds later an inferno rages in the pitch black hall: “Liebe Kinderrr, gebt fein Acht. Ich hab euch etwas mitgebrrract, hab es aur meinerrrr Brrrust gerrrissen….” Till’s guttural ghostly vocals resound to Richard and Paul’s thundering guitar chords. Meter-high columns of fire blaze on the platform, suddenly there’s a flash from Tills chest. The singer’s heart burns brightly - lasting several minutes. The pyro-effects, explosions, snowstorms, water and confetti of the 100-minute show leave not only the fans breathless but also the performers. Also, during “Rammstein”, Till, the rocker with the pyro-license is completely in flames, his life genuinely on the line. “As soon as the fire burns his skin, it helps to keep clenching the teeth together and not breathe" grins Flake. “If he should inhale the glowing hot gases its curtains for him!"
