Rammstein :Mutter Review – Outburn Magazine

Rammstein – Mutter (Republic)
A burning 5/5 rating
Outburn Magazine – May 2001

Symphonic electronic metal: Germany’s bombastic Rammstein return with Mutter, their third album of fire-breathing guitars, orchestral textures, and fist raising anthems. I can almost imagine the pyrotechnics exploding during Ich will and especially Feuer Frei! with the accessible yelps of ‘Bang Bang!’. But the hard charging music of Mutter does occasionally mumble. While the songs at the beginning of “Mutter”, such as Mein Herz brennt, Links 2 3 4, and Sonne, make an admirable attempt at blending metal guitars and symphonic nuances into pop song structures, some of the choruses seem too disconnected, cluttered with maybe too many melodies, and overtake the more compelling intros and verses. The really good parts seem too short and the soft parts seem too long, and I'm often caught turning the volume way up or way down.
However, the second half of “Mutter” firmly settles into a smooth, pummeling groove and starts to really take off with the upbeat guitar and prickly keyboards of Spieluhr, and is followed by the best songs of the album: the well balanced and undeniable power of Zwitter, Rein Raus, and Adios. The softer side of Nebel even nicely closes out the album. “Mutter” may sometimes be a little too mushy, but the album fully satisfies in the end, and proves why Rammstein are better than most of today's bland rock bands. ~
