Review's of Reise, Reise

Q Magazine – November 2004
Ludicrous Germans bring the noise again

Rammstein
Reise, Reise
(Universal)

Wagnerian Kraut-rock is hardly fashionable but pyrotechnic-crazed German sextet Rammstein have had far too much fun over the past 11 years to modify their daft MO.

Even without hearing their fourth studio album you could guess it would feature a song dedicated to penis-frying cannibal Armin Meiwes and, sure enough, here comes “Mein Teil”, another pop-rock-stomp over-the-topped-off with Till Lindemann’s Halloween vocals.

Admittedly, getting yelled at in German is never relaxing but songs as stupidly entertaining as “Amerika” (Political shouting), “Amour” (Romantic shouting) and “Keine Lust” (Nihilistic shouting) make up for the Migraine with laughter.

Essential Track: Mein Teil

Rocksound – November 2004
Rammstein
“Reise Reise” (Universal)

Certainly one of my most anticipated albums of the year, the crushing fourth album from this German sextet has been shrouded in greater secrecy than Wayne Rooney’s sexual liaisons. Opening with the bombastic ‘Reise Reise’, it’s on ‘Amerika’ that the band’s sense of humour comes to the fore with their tongue-in-backe reportage of American-driven globalisation. Three years on from ‘Mutter’ and we’re faced with an energised Rammstein – their highly polished wall-of-sound production values are still in full effect whilst the explosive performances in ‘Reise Reise’ hint suggestively at the pyrotechnical insanity we can expect when experiencing the band in the, possibly slightly barbequed, flesh. ‘Morgenstern’ and the tasty ‘Mein Teil’ will have problem placating the old guard whilst ‘Moskau’ and ‘Stein um Stein’ take some unexpected turns that always leave you wanting more. Burn, baby, burn!
